Indigenous Employment Case Study

Rio Tinto's commitment to indigenous employment opportunities in the East Kimberley.

Argyle Diamonds is located on the traditional land of the Mirriuwang and Gija people.  Argyle recognises local Aboriginal People as genuine stakeholders, due to their cultural and historical ties to the land and this recognition translates to an obligation to manage land and mineral resources in a responsible manner.

In 1999 Argyle set a target of 15% Indigenous employment by 2005.  In 2000 Argyle developed tailored selection methodologies to have seen an increase fro 4.6% Indigenous employment in 2000 to 10.5% in the first quarter of 2002.  Known as the "Assessment Program", the process has replaced traditional recruitment methods with a 'hands on' three day assessment workshop.  Participants stay on and are assessed through a range of practical tasks and activities designed as a "Client centred", culturally appropriate selection methodology.
