Materials Engineer
Also known as: Materials Scientist
Materials Engineering is a challenging profession which often forms the bridge between the scientific disciplines of physics and chemistry and the various branches of engineering.
Materials scientists study the properties and uses of non-metallic materials and advise on the technical aspects of their manufacture and processing.
Duties
Materials scientist may perform the following tasks:
- study the properties of materials such as ceramics, polymers and plastics, composite materials and rubbers
- manage and perform laboratory investigations, testing and evaluations of materials and products
- plan and undertake experimental production of non-metallic materials
- work out the criteria for the selection of non-metallic materials, and establish the requirements for protection against deterioration
- talk to other scientists and engineers about the development and production of non-metallic materials.

Salary
$60 000 - $100 000
