Conference Media Statement
The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia (CME) inaugural career conference ‘Unearthing People for the Future’ took place on June 15 & 16, which targeted career advisors, teachers and recruitment agents.
According to CME Chief Executive Reg Howard-Smith, access to a skilled workforce remains a focus during one of the most challenging periods the Western Australian resources sector has experienced.
“Although currently not encountering the same extent in growth, the sector recognises the importance of positioning itself to be prepared for the next growth phase and the need to build tomorrow’s workforce today,” Mr Howard-Smith said.
“Scenarios developed as part of the Chamber of Minerals and Energy’s (CME) Growth Outlook Study suggest substantial growth in Western Australia will return in the medium to long-term.” he said.
Future labour demand driven by the minerals and energy industry will therefore continue to put pressure on the Australian workforce and create labour shortages.
The program focused on the resource industry’s greatest asset, its people. Presenters at the conference represented the broad fields of work offered by the resources sector. Speakers, all specialists in their field, discussed their current role, their career path and the opportunities, experiences and benefits the sector had provided them with.
“This conference provided delegates with the capacity to assist students and/or job seekers to make informed education and employment choices, access appropriate support, and connect education and training pathways with career choices and employment prospects in the exciting and dynamic resource sector.” Mr Howard-Smith said.
The Conference was addressed by the Hon. Dr Elizabeth Constable MLA, Minister for Education; Tourism
The conference was seen as a new means of reaching a larger number of our target audience. It is hoped that the lives of students and/or job seekers will be greater influenced with 92% of delegates feeling better equipped to advise others on career pathways into the resource sector.
