Government boosts apprenticeships to support our national recovery

May 24, 2010

Deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard and the Federal Member for Flynn, Chris Trevor were today on the site of Gregory Crinum Mine to meet with mechanical and electrical apprentices working on the site.

Taking the time out to enjoy a sausage sizzle, the apprentices talked to the Deputy Prime Minister and the local member about their experiences working at the mine.

The Australian Government recognises the invaluable role apprentices play in the continued growth of our productivity and our economy.

That’s why the Rudd Labor Government has extended the Apprentice Kickstart program for another six months to encourage more employers to sign up new apprenticeship places.

Last summer, around 24,400 apprenticeship positions were granted under the Federal Government program in just three months.

Over the next six months, the Government will more than triple the commencement bonus from $1,500 to $4,850 for small to medium businesses for each apprentice they take on.

The Apprentice Kickstart extension forms part of the Government’s $660 million Skills for Sustainable Growth package, announced in last week’s Federal Budget.

The package includes $200 million for a Critical Investment Fund which will partner with industry to provide up to 39,000 new training places in sectors with emerging skill shortages including the infrastructure, construction, renewable energy and resource sectors.

The new training positions created by the fund will help industry address emerging skill shortages.

Mr Trevor said the Deputy Prime Minister’s announcement today to increase pre-apprenticeship training and ongoing mentoring would also help build better apprentices.

“Pre-apprenticeship training and extra support during an apprenticeship are central to making sure young Australians stick with their training and move into secure, long-term careers.

“Increasing the number of apprentices will also help us meet the demand for a skilled and dynamic workforce,” Mr Trevor said.

Mr Trevor said the Deputy Prime Minister’s visit came at the start of Career Development Week, which includes a special display at the Emerald Town Library on career opportunities.

“I encourage everyone looking to learn a new skill or improve their existing skills to come along and learn more about what their future career holds,” Mr Trevor said.
